How to Choose a Linen Quilt Cover (Size, Weight & Care)

Your quilt cover is the biggest piece of fabric in your bedroom. It's the first thing you see when you walk in, and the thing you pull up to your chin every night. So it's worth choosing well.

Your quilt cover is the biggest piece of fabric in your bedroom. It's the first thing you see when you walk in, and the thing you pull up to your chin every night. So it's worth choosing well.

Whether you call it a quilt cover, a doona cover or a duvet cover, the questions are the same. Here's what we tell customers who ask us where to start.

1. Start with the fabric

Most quilt covers are cotton, polyester or a blend. Linen is different because it's made from the flax plant, and it behaves differently on the bed.

  • It breathes. Linen lets air move through it, so you're less likely to wake up hot in summer.
  • It works year-round. The same linen quilt cover feels cool in January and cosy in July.
  • It gets softer. Our linen is stonewashed before it reaches you, and it keeps softening with every wash. Does Linen Get Softer Over Time?

All our quilt covers are 100% French Flax® linen and OEKO-TEX® certified.

2. Get the size right

Match your quilt cover to your quilt insert, not just your bed. A Queen bed with a King quilt needs a King cover.

Our linen quilt covers come in Single, Double, Queen, King and Super King. If you like a fuller, more generous drape over the sides of the bed, many customers size up one size for both the insert and the cover.

3. Choose your shade (or two)

With 20+ shades, most people pick in one of two ways:

  • One calm colour — White, Natural or a soft neutral you'll never tire of. Easy to mix with any sheets.

  • A statement colour — a deeper shade that sets the mood of the room, paired with neutral sheets.

Can't decide? A reversible quilt cover gives you two looks in one. Flip it over for a new bedroom without buying anything new.

4. Check the closure and ties

The little ties inside each corner of a good quilt cover aren't decoration. They hold your insert in place so it doesn't bunch at the bottom of the cover overnight. We explain how to use them here.

5. Pair it with the right insert

A linen quilt cover over a heavy, synthetic insert will still feel hot. For year-round comfort, pair it with a mid-weight insert. Our Hotel Cloud Quilt is 400gsm and made to go under our French Flax Linen Quilt Covers.

6. Care for it so it lasts

  • Wash in cool or warm water on a gentle cycle.

  • Skip the fabric softener. Linen softens on its own.

  • Line dry, or tumble dry on low and take it out while slightly damp.

  • Embrace the crumple. Linen isn't meant to be ironed flat.
