Why Do We Use French Flax Linen?
Posted: 02 June 2025
Because you deserve to have good quality sleep, every night.
Once you’ve experienced quality linen bed sheets, there’s no turning back.
We believe that when you sleep well, you live well, and that all starts with the right bedding. Over a decade ago, we searched high and low for fabric that felt as good as it looked. And it was 100% French flax linen that stole our hearts.
But what is French flax linen? And why do we use it in our entire collection of linen bedding, from quilt covers to linen sheet sets?

What is French Flax Linen?
French flax linen is made from the fibres of the flax plant and is grown in the region of Normandy, France. The climate, the rich soil, and the farming methods all come together to produce some of the best flax in the world.
Once harvested, those flax fibres are spun into yarn and woven into the fabric we know and love.
At I Love Linen, we use 100% French flax to make all our bedding, from linen flat sheets, quilt covers, and sheet sets, because we believe comfort starts with great quality.

Why French Flax?
There’s linen, and then there’s French flax linen. The difference? It's all in the threads.
French-grown flax is considered the gold standard for linen. It produces long staple French flax fibres, which means the threads are longer and stronger than short staple yarns. That might sound technical, but here’s what it really is… there are fewer joins in the weave because the yarns are longer, which is better for durability.

How is French Linen Made?
There’s something special about knowing your linen bedding is from a fabric that’s grown, not made. The process of turning flax into linen is far more sustainable than many other materials.
Here’s how it works:
1. Grow the flax
2. Harvest the plants (once mature, the flax is pulled from the ground, not cut)
3. Ret the stalks (etting breaks down the outer layer of the stalks so the inner fibres can be removed.)
4. Extract the fibres
5. Spin into yarn
6. Weave the fabric

And that's why I Love Linen loves French flax
Life's too short for scratchy sheets.
We’re proud to work with this beautiful natural fibre every day, and even prouder to know that it helps thousands of Australians sleep better, live better, and create homes they truly love.
Whether you’re new to linen or looking to expand your collection, we invite you to feel the difference for yourself.
