Does Linen Get Softer Over Time?

The secret behind softer linen
Bed sheets are one of our favourite things. But buying them with the expectation they’ll actually get better over time? That’s not something we’re used to with cotton, bamboo or most other fabrics.
Linen, however, is different.
Does linen really get softer over time?
Short answer: yes, and it’s one of linen’s best features.
When you first buy linen sheets or a linen quilt cover from us, they're already soft (thanks to our stone washing technique). But unlike most fabrics, linen only gets better.
With every wash, the fibres slowly relax, creating that soft, drapey, effortlessly luxe feel linen is known for.
Over time, linen becomes:
- Softer against your skin
- More fluid and relaxed
- Less structured and more inviting
- Even more breathable and comfortable
The science behind why linen gets softer
When linen is first woven, the fibres are tightly structured. But as you wash and use your sheets, a few things start to happen...
Water, movement and friction gently loosen the flax fibres over time, softening their structure. So, the fabric becomes more supple.
This improves airflow and breathability, making linen even better for temperature regulation.
Why linen sheets feel different to cotton
If you’re used to cotton sheets, linen can feel noticeably different at first, and that’s a good thing.
Cotton fibres are short and fluffy, which gives instant softness. Linen fibres are long, strong and smooth, which creates a fabric that:
- Breathes beautifully
- Wicks away moisture
- Regulates temperature naturally
- Softens over time instead of wearing out
Linen is made to be lived in
Linen is designed for slow mornings, afternoon naps, Sunday sleep-ins and everything in between.
It’s made to be washed.
Made to be slept in.
Made to soften.
Made to last.
And the longer you have it, the more you’ll love it.
