Mother's Day 2021

This Mother's Day we want to celebrate diversity and how unique all maternal relationships and journeys are. This year, we chose to connect with motherly figures in our community and share their unique stories. Our intention is to celebrate Motherhood in all of her forms. Read on to learn about the Women in your community and their individual parenting journeys.

WORDS, FROM HER.

@TAMEKAYALLOP

What does mother's day represent for you?

"For me Mother's Day is a special day that I get to celebrate with my wife, it's a day (along with Father's Day) that I am grateful to be living in a day and age where same sex couples are able to have families of our own and cherish the gift of new life."

Who/what has influenced your parenting style?

"Kirsty's parents have had a big influence on our parenting style as we lived with them for the first 3 months of Harley's life. Their calm and warm demeanour really provided the perfect safe haven for us as new mums. Also, spending a lot of time on the Gold Coast allows us to live outside and promote an active lifestyle for Harley."

How do you and kirsty share the mum load?

"Sharing the load can definitely be difficult at times as I travel a lot for my football. We always try and do bath and bedtime together as a family and then I take care of dinner once Harley is down for the night so Kirsty can have time to herself."

What advice will you share with your little one?

"Find time every day to do something you love, even if it's just for a second."

What does mother's day represent for you?

"For me, growing up, this day was always a little awkward - my father raised me alone so while everyone else at school was making little cards and gifts for their Mothers, I wasn’t. Since having my own babies Mother’s Day has a whole new meaning and I have a whole new appreciation for it. Now, for me, this day is about celebrating Mothers all over - celebrating all the different types of Mothers & celebrating the highest highs and lowest lows of motherhood. Motherhood is possibly one of the toughest jobs in the world, so a day to be honoured and appreciated is so special."

Who/what has influenced your parenting style?

"There are a number of people and things I have (and continue) to take inspiration from. I come from a huge family so I guess I have taken parts from each person and have applied whatever works for our family. My father raised me by himself, from a newborn, so he has played such a huge role in my parenting style."

How do you balance taking care of yourself while being a busy mum?

"Truthfully, I’m still working on this. I find it so difficult to balance self-care and mum life but usually, I’ll make myself a margarita, put on a movie and hop in the bath."

What advice will you share with your little ones?

"Oh that’s a hard one but definitely- be yourself, always."

@EMILYHALL86

What does mother's day represent for you?

"Mothers day to me represents celebrating our mums and all that they do / we do for our families. Motherhood is a constant juggle and I have to say, I think we’re a bunch of superheroes. It is definitely the hardest job I’ve ever done, but the most rewarding."

What do you wish for your children?

"I just want my kids to feel safe, secure and loved without hovering over them. I have two very happy, healthy boys so I must be doing something right!"

How do you take care of yourself while being a busy mum?

"Taking care of yourself as a mum is so important. If you are running on empty, your kids don’t have the best version of you. There is absolutely no shame in taking time out for yourself so you can be a better parent. I find exercise is a really good way of letting off some steam and I always feel great afterwards. I also try and get a facial once a month and get my nails done fortnightly."

What advice will you share with your little ones?

"Always be kind."
