Olive Home Tour: Entering Our Cottagecore Era at Palmer & Gunn

Posted: 01 August 2025

We're in the thick of winter, so that means cosy PJs, Olive sheets, and the charm of farm house living.

As the colder weather sets in, we took a trip into the serene Austinville Valley of the Gold Coast Hinterland, Queensland.

Palmer & Gunn is a place, husband and wife, Clancy and Fiona, built from scratch and poured their hearts into. And as soon as we stepped foot inside, we felt instantly at home.

Their approach to design is thoughtful and beautifully unfussy, with gingham curtains, heirloom furniture, and natural materials creating a home that feels both lived-in and loved.

Q: What first made you fall in love with The Palmer & Gunn Farmhouse? Was there a moment that sealed it for you?

A: To be honest, there wasn’t a lot to love at first sight—the property was severely neglected when we bought it. But we saw its potential straight away. We were drawn to the original farmhouse, part of which dates back to the 1930s, the beautiful old shed, and the creek running through the property. It really ticked all the boxes for us, and we knew with a bit of love and vision, we could transform the farmhouse into something truly special.

Q: How have you made sure to keep the Farmhouse aesthetic the whole way through the house?

A: Our home is a treasure trove of collected pieces, each with its own story—almost everything is second-hand. In the kitchen, modern appliances are cleverly tucked away behind gingham linen curtains, while antique freestanding cupboards, recycled hardwood benchtops, and an old farmhouse sink help create the feeling that the space has always been part of the original home (even though there was no kitchen when we moved in!). We’ve leaned into natural materials like timber and linen, and used a palette of antique whites and greens to bring the outside in and maintain a consistent farmhouse feel throughout.

Q: When people visit Palmer & Gunn, what do you hope they feel when they walk through the door?

A: We’ve always wanted our home to feel unfussy—like a big, warm hug. Our hope is that people leave feeling a little lighter and more relaxed after a visit. The kind of place you can always drop in for a cuppa and head home with an armful of whatever produce is in season. For us, it’s all about simple comforts and creating a space that feels welcoming and lived-in.

Q: What’s the soundtrack to a perfect slow morning here?

A: It would have to be something from the 1940s—Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald. The kind of jazz that drifts through the house with the windows wide open, coffee brewing, and a cooked breakfast sizzling on the stove. It’s slow, soulful, and perfectly sets the pace for a gentle start to the day.
