How to Choose a Hotel Pillow You'll Love for Years

Posted: 28 September 2026

"Hotel pillow" is on a lot of labels these days. Some are the real thing. Some just borrow the name. Here's how to tell the difference, and how to choose hotel pillows that suit the way you sleep.

Step 1: Know how you sleep

This matters more than anything else on the label.

Side sleepers need the most height to fill the gap between shoulder and neck.
Look for a full, well-filled hotel pillow, or use two.

Back sleepers do best with medium height, so your head isn't pushed forward.

Stomach sleepers want a softer, lower pillow.

A genuine hotel pillow is designed to sit in the middle: medium feel, supportive enough for side sleepers and soft enough for back sleepers.

Step 2: Check the fill

The fill decides how your pillow feels and how long it lasts.

Our Hotel Cloud Pillow uses a vegan microfibre fill made to feel like down, without the feathers or dust mites.

Fill Feels like Good to know
Down Very soft, squashy Can prickle and isn't ideal for allergy-prone sleepers
Feather Firmer, can crunch Quills can poke through over time
Memory foam Dense, moulds to you Can sleep hot, doesn't feel like a hotel
Microfibre (down alternative) Soft and springy, like down Hypoallergenic, easy to care for

Step 3: Look at how it's made

Two details separate a real hotel pillow from a lookalike:

Gusseted sides.
A strip of fabric around the edge keeps the fill even so the pillow doesn't sag in the middle. Ours are double-gusseted.

A breathable cotton casing.
It lets air move through the pillow so you stay cool.

Step 4: Pick your size

Standard (50 x 75cm) fits most pillowcases and suits Double and Queen beds.

King (50 x 90cm)
is longer, for King beds or anyone who likes a pillow to hug.

For the full hotel look, stack two per side: one to sleep on and one to prop up against for reading.

Step 5: Protect them from day one

Hotels always put a protector under the pillowcase. It keeps the fill fresh and helps your pillows last. Every Hotel Cloud Pillow comes with a free pillow protector, so you're set from the first night.

Step 6: Know when to replace them

Even the best hotel pillows won't last forever. Fold yours in half. If it stays folded instead of springing back, it's time for a new one.
