Meet Christal, whose beautiful property nestled in the NSW Hinterland effortlessly embodies modern cottage core. We chat with her to learn how to replicate this desirable style in our own homes, gain insights from her experience of building from scratch, and discover what she loves most about her unique home.
Nestled in the tranquil village of Nunderi, Northern New South Wales, Zeb Modern Barn is an architectural gem crafted by Christal Alexander.
This modern barnhouse perfectly balances indoor and outdoor living, with a monochromatic palette that complements its natural surroundings. Surrounded by lush forests and scenic mountains, the dark Axon cladding of the barn exudes contemporary charm, blending seamlessly into its cosy gully.
Despite the challenging terrain, Christal and her husband transformed this site into a family sanctuary, featuring an open-plan layout that effortlessly connects indoor and outdoor spaces.
With natural elements like travertine and timber, and cosy touches from I Love Linen, Zeb Modern Barn captures a modern cottagecore aesthetic while staying true to its natural roots. Discover how Christal achieved this look and how you can bring this style to your own home.
Zeb Modern Barn is more than just a beautiful home; it’s a testament to thoughtful design and sustainable living. Christal meticulously chose materials that are not only visually appealing but also environmentally friendly, like reclaimed wood and low-VOC finishes. The home’s large windows and high ceilings maximise natural light, reducing the need for artificial lighting and creating an airy, spacious feel. Outside, native plants have been thoughtfully incorporated into the landscaping to create a seamless blend with the surrounding bushland, supporting local wildlife and reducing water usage. This holistic approach to design makes Zeb Modern Barn a model for modern, sustainable living that honours the natural beauty of its surroundings.

Q: From the moment you arrive via the sweeping driveway to your home, you're struck by the clean lines and striking tones Zeb offers on the outside. For anyone looking to transform their space with this ambience in mind, where is the best place to start when laying the foundation for a design transformation?
A: To transform your space with Zeb's striking ambience, start by selecting a dark, rich exterior colour scheme, incorporating natural materials like blackbutt timber and travertine, emphasising clean lines and a high-pitched roof, enhancing the landscaping with native plants, and using strategic lighting to highlight key features. I feel these were the building blocks, so to speak, to get the design balance right

Q: You led the interior design process, and reflecting on your incredible build, what are your top three 'must-haves' that homeowners should consider to achieve a liveable home that is cosy and aesthetically Zeb in feel?
A: Oh, this is a great question. Reflecting on my build, my top three 'must-haves' for a liveable, cosy home with a Zeb aesthetic are: using natural materials like timber and stone to add warmth and texture while connecting with the outdoors; designing an open layout for improved flow and functionality, avoiding narrow, pokey hallways; and incorporating pops of colour in walls or cabinetry to create a warm, inviting atmosphere.
Q: Based on your experience in building from scratch, could you share some tips you would follow again if you were to build in this style?
A: I would definitely do this again—I love designing, building, and being fully immersed in the process. I prioritise open-plan living, incorporating large stacker or bifold doors to bring the outdoors in, and creating expansive alfresco areas. High-pitched ceilings are essential for a spacious and inviting entertainment area. Plus, having a dedicated end of the house for the kids where I can simply close the door to keep the mess out of sight is a game-changer!
Q: For those aspiring to achieve a modern barn style without major renovations, we'd love to hear your décor hacks that can instantly elevate a room's elegance and bring in that coveted feel.
A: Incorporate natural materials like wood and stone through furniture, accents, or wall treatments; use a neutral colour palette with rich textures to add depth and sophistication; and introduce large, statement lighting fixtures to create a focal point and enhance the room's ambience. These elements can instantly elevate a room's elegance and evoke the sought-after modern barn feel.

Q. Colours play a significant role in design. Could you suggest specific colours that homeowners can incorporate into their décor to effortlessly create a cosy atmosphere?
A: I like to create a cosy atmosphere by incorporating warm, earthy colours like deep browns, rich taupes, and soft beige. Adding accents of muted greens and warm creams can further enhance the comfort and warmth of the space. These colours create a soothing environment and help make a room feel inviting and snug.
Q: What is your favourite room in the home and why?
A: My favourite room has to be the master bedroom. I love having a spacious retreat where I can relax and enjoy the fruits of our hard work. It features a stunning A-frame window that extends from floor to ceiling and wall to wall, letting in all the natural light from the sun and moon. It’s such an inviting space, and I love every part of it.
