3 Red Flags to Look Out for When Buying Linen
Posted: 05 August 2025
Here's how to spot the real deal
Once you get your hands on linen sheets, everything changes. But before you go off buying the first set of bedding you see, it’s important to note that not all linen is made the same.
While quality linen only gets better with time, cheaper options can leave you with scratchy sheets, fading colour, and a whole lot of disappointment.
If you're investing in anything from linen quilt covers to a linen tablecloth for your home, here are three red flags you should avoid.
Red Flag #1: It’s Not 100% Linen
If the label says “linen blend” or doesn’t specify the full fibre content, that’s your first clue. Some brands mix linen with synthetic fibres like polyester or rayon to cut costs, but it shows. The fabric won’t breathe as well, and it won’t soften the same way over time.
Green flags:
1. “100% French Flax Linen”
2. Full fibre content on the label (no vague wording)
3. Brands that are transparent about their sourcing and production
Red Flag #2: It’s Suspiciously Cheap
We’re all for value, but linen is a premium fabric, and it’s worth paying for. It’s natural, takes time to grow, harvest and weave properly. So if you come across a full linen quilt cover set that seems unusually affordable, it’s worth asking why.
Green flags:
1. Honest, transparent pricing
2. Certifications like OEKO-TEX® (so you know it’s safe on skin)
3. A brand that talks about how their linen is made, not just how affordable it is
Red Flag #3: They Talk About Thread Count
Thread count is a common selling point for cotton, but it doesn’t apply to linen. Linen is made from thicker, longer yarns and has a naturally looser weave. The quality of linen is measured in GSM (grams per square metre), not thread count.
A good linen sheet set will usually sit around 160–180 GSM, which strikes the right balance between softness, breathability and durability.
Green flags:
1. Clear mention of GSM in that 160–180 range
2. 100% pure linen (ideally from French flax)
3. Brands that prioritise how the fabric feels and wears, not just numbers
