3 Stays We’re Obsessed With This Summer

Posted: 07 January 2025

To help you make the most of the season, we’ve handpicked three local gems that are perfect for hitting pause, soaking up the sun, and creating memories that last forever.

Whether you're craving the coast or feeling like a bit of farm life, we've got just the place...

First up, we headed to Pipis, a getaway at Cabarita Beach in NSW, where we sat down with the owner to get the inside scoop on what makes this spot so special.

Q: You took on the ambitious task of designing and building two beautiful properties. Do both share the same interior style, and how would you describe it?

A: It was a big undertaking, but a lot of fun! The Pipis team is made up of two families who aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty and work together. We transformed a run-down duplex into a special holiday spot for small families and couples seeking the perfect escape at Cabarita Beach, Northern NSW. Our style is coastal modern Mediterranean, influenced by the natural beauty of the area. The name “Pipis” comes from a local shell, inspiring the triangular kitchen islands and neutral tones. Both villas have similar layouts with small tweaks for privacy, views, and breeze orientation. The design process took 3 months, with the build itself taking 9 months, as we were hands-on to manage the budget while working our regular jobs.

Q: For anyone wanting to replicate a similar style, what are the 'must-haves' to consider?

A: To achieve a coastal modern Mediterranean style, start with natural light and orientation. We reworked the floor plan to flood the living areas with light, using skylights and voids to maximise this. The palette is simple but effective—soft whites, pinks in the master bedroom, and gentle greens in the second room. We used hard-wearing timber floors, travertine crazy pave tiling in the bathrooms, and luxurious carpets in the bedrooms. Brushed brass tapware, warm lighting, and soft furnishings complete the look. We also added a bit of fun with custom bunks in the kids’ room.

Q: What makes staying at Pipis unique?

A: Pipis offers something different to anything else on the Tweed. Each villa is designed to help guests unwind with everything they need to relax. It’s centrally located, with easy access to cafes, restaurants, the surf beach, the headland lookout, and rock pools. The villas are perfect for both families (up to 5 people) and couples looking for a cosy getaway. Guests love how quickly they slip into holiday mode as soon as they walk through the door.

Q: What’s your favourite nook or room?

A: Our Mediterranean-inspired bathroom is a favourite. With its creamy microcement and earthy travertine, it’s a calming sanctuary. The huge circular bath, skylight, and garden view make it feel like you’re outdoors, but with complete privacy. It’s our proudest space, designed to offer a day spa-like experience.

Q: What does the perfect stay look like at Pipis?

A: A typical arrival is on a Friday afternoon. After settling in and enjoying a complimentary glass of red, we recommend getting takeaway pizza from The Burrow and walking up the headland for a sunset view. On Saturday, rise early to watch the sunrise or catch some waves (if staying between May - October, you’ll be sure to spot whales jumping), then grab breakfast at Tucker in Casuarina. For lunch, enjoy Halcyon House, followed by a delicious Italian dinner at Number 35 Kitchen. In between, relax with a book or take an afternoon nap.
