What to look for before you buy
Not all linen is created equal. The fabric, the weave, the stonewashing process all makes a difference to how your sheets feel on night one, and how they hold up five years later.
When you're shopping, look for:
- French flax linen. grown in Western Europe (particularly France and Belgium), this is considered the gold standard. The cooler climate produces stronger, finer fibres.
- Stonewashing. This pre-softens the linen so it feels good from the first night, not the fifteenth.
- GSM (grams per square metre), a good quality linen sheet sits somewhere between 155–175 GSM. Too light and it won't last; too heavy and it loses that breathable quality that makes linen so special.
- Generous sizing. There's nothing worse than a fitted sheet that pings off the corners at 2 am. Look for deep pockets and sizing that's made with Australian beds in mind.
